Skating In Circles....Varsity Drops Two ...

12/20/10

Glens Falls and Msgr. Farrell, two formidable teams on the schedule, proved to be too much for the shorthanded Varsity; resulting in 3-1( Glens Falls) and 6-2  (Farrell) defeats.

Playing their eight game in eleven days, skating with only ten players due to injuries and vacation, the Burke Boys ( girl) gave both opponents a run for their money; only to come up empty late in the game. Despite the set backs, the grit of the varsity was on display throughout the weekend.

A Holiday break may be just what the doctor ordered.

Notes: Team Pictures on Monday-Re-echeduled...All games this week will be re-scheduled.

WORKING OVERTIME REAPS REWARDS.....

12/18/10

Freshman Ian Bernes completed his hat trick in grand form; scoring an overtime goal to pace the Baby Eagles to a 4-3 victory over Catholic school rival Iona Prep.

In the most exciting game of the season , steady Goaltending by Ryan Glander and Stephen Herschel helped lead the JV team to victory.  Aidan Ludington completed the scoring for the Eagles . David Malota stood out on defense.

The pace was fast, the defense was good, the goaltending was solid. Not a bad way to stay undefeated.Due to the Holidays there will be no practice 12/24 -- next game 12/27 vs ST.Joe's @ Sportorama 4:40pm

BABY EAGLES FLYING....Live with Matt and Mike

12/18/10

The Baby Eagles swept the season series with Msgr. Farrell with a 6-2 victory at the Staten Island Pavilion on Tuesday. Dylan Healey wasted no time setting the tone for the Eagles with a goal 10 seconds into the game and Ian Bernes added two quick goals for the 3-0 lead; the Eagles never looked back.

Ryan Glander and Stephen Herschel shut down the Lions in goal- allowing two goals on 24 shots while Matt Wilson and Connor Healey helped shore up the defense. Jack Tofallos, Teresa Segreti, Kyle McNamara completed the Eagle's scoring.

On Friday NFA became the latest prey of the JV team . The scrimmage displayed lots of offense and good defense by the JV team led by Sophomore Sean Matusch and Kyle McNamara. Stephen Seccafico scored his first Eagle goal.

A Saturday 7:45pm contest vs Iona Prep will be up next for the JV team. The game will be live on Internet radio hosted by Matt and Mike the regular Burke Catholic announcers. The game will also be archived on their Web Site.. Anyone interested in sponsoring any of the Broadcasts can contact Coach Trezza for details.

Close But No Cigar.....

12/10./2010

Young Birds earn their wings........
Freshman Ian Bernes registered his first hat trick as an Eagle to lead the Varsity to a 8-1 win over league rivals NFA.  Senior Mark McAteer also had a big five point  night - netting two goals and three assist -  as the offense came to life pouring 49 shots on goal. Sophomore Sean Matusch(2)and Senior Richard Hudzik rounded out the offensive outburst; final score Eagles 8 NFA 1.

On the defensive side of the blue line, Senior Alex Day led a shortened staff of defenseman to help seal the victory. Senior Yale Gropman, Sophomore Sean Matusch, and Freshman Dylan Healey,  shut down any ideas NFA had about scoring. With Connor Dolansky sustaining a wrist injury, the defense worked overtime in the win.

This year's version of Burke Hockey is a work in progress. Long way to go but with the win a good step forward.

HATS OFF: Mike McAteer, Mark McAteer, Richard Hudzik have been chosen as this year's Varsity Captains while Craig Mende and Connor Dolansky will wear the ' A'.

12/11/2010

With the loss of Junior defenseman Connor Dolansky to a wrist injury, the short bench of the Eagles proved to be costly.A weary Eagles defense allowed three third period goals to the Harvey School to absorb a 5-3 loss at Ice Time. Junior goaltender Eric Haden was solid in net but could not save the day. Feshman Ian Bernes, Senior Mark McAteer, and Senior Richard Hudzik continued with their hot hands;  each scoring a goal.

12/12/2010

For the second straight night, the varsity went head to head with a good opponent only to fall short in the third period; final score Iona Prep 4 Burke 2. After falling behind 2-0 early , the Eagles stormed back with a power play goal by Senior Alex Day and a 40 ft slap shot goal by Sean Matusch to even things at 2. Iona got the advantage with a third period goal and the game clincher with an empty net tally.

Close but no cigar. The injury ridden Eagles continue to improve and be competitive yet are still trying to figure out how to win. There is no lack of effort in their quest.

Skating in Circles:

Connor Dolansky will be out 4-6 weeks with a broken bone in the wrist area. Connor's loss is a big one for the Eagles as Connor has done a fine job helping lead the defense. Connor is already chomping on the bit to return hopefully sometime in late January..... Nick Musco is rumored to be a week or two away from getting back into action. A leg injury has kept him sidelined since early off-ice practices.....Freshman Dylan Healey has done a fine job on defense since joining the team. Normally a forward, Dylan has stepped up to help out a struggling undermanned defense...senior Yale Gropman has brought his feisty championship soccer attitude to the Eagle defense. Direct from his competitions in this year's NYS Soccer State final , Yale has shown he will not back down when the corners call.....

Two Steps Forward...One Step Back......Next....

11/29/10

Forward...Despite losing 2 of 3 at the White Plains Tournament, the Burke Eagles demonstrated some grit over the Holiday weekend. After a 6-0 loss to Tournament winners and Section 1X rivals Monroe Woodbury , the Varsity lost a hard fought contest vs Salem 3-2.  A 8-0 win over NFA concluded the long Holiday weekend which also saw the Eagles win all three of its 30 minute scrimmages vs Scarsdale, Fieldstone, North Rockland.

The defensive team of Alex Day, Yale Gropman, Sean Matusch, Connor Dolansky continued to improve in front of goaltenders Eric Hayden and Steven Herschel; they allowed the opponents only one goal in the scrimmages and played tough in the Tournament.

Michael McAteer led the Eagles offense with four goals and nine assist while Richard Hudzik chipped in with three goals and four assist.

Backward ..... On Monday a speedy St. Joes team put some added pressure on the Eagle defense as they skated to a 7-1 victory over the Burke varsity. Despite out shooting their opponents , a lack-luster defensive effort by the entire Burke team set the tone for the loss.

One way hockey usually ends up one way......

Next Step.... Varsity heads to the Harvey School Wednesday for an afternoon contest.

Weekly Schedule:
  • Wednesday : Varsity vs Harvey School
  • Thursday : Regular Practice
  • Friday: Regular JV/VARSITY Practice
  • Saturday : JV vs St.Joes - IceTime 7:30

Bloated Weekend...

11/24/2010

Hockey Overload. The Varsity Eagles will be very busy this Holiday weekend. Friday will see the Eagles play their initial White Plains Tournament game vs Monroe at Ebersole Rink 11 am. . Saturday will feature the Eagle's traditional sojourn to the Ice Hutch for the Scarsdale Jamboree scrimmage 11am to 2pm;  they will compete in three thirty minute periods vs three different teams: Scarsdale, Fieldstone Prep, North Rockland.

The rest of the weekend will consist of two games to complete the White Plains Tournament. Ending the four day marathon will be a 5pm home game vs ST.Joseph on Monday.

After a solid scrimmage vs Clarkstown , led by the offensive play of  Seniors Michael McAteer, Mark McAteer, Richard Hudzik, and the improved defensive play of Junior Connor Dolanski, the Varsity will get a a full weekend of skating to build on their team play.

First time for everything....

11/20/2010

The Varsity stumbled out of the gate in their first exhibition contest of the season. Msg. Farrell of Staten Island brought all their weapons against the Eagles to gain the victory; final score 10-3.

Despite the score, the newest version of Burke Varsity Hockey skated to a night of firsts:

Sophomore Teresa Segreti became the first female player to skate for the Varsity. Teresa, who also carried a 97 average for the first marking period, did a very nice job both on wing and on defense.

Freshman Dylan Healey and Ian Bernes got their first taste of Varsity hockey; a little bitter for the newest Healey addition who sustained a shoulder strain early in the contest and had to be sidelined but sweet for Ian who registered his first Eagle goal.

Freshman Goaltender Stephen Herschel got his first look from between the pipes. Stephen , who saw 12 shots on net in the third period, also suits up for the JV squad.

Look for this Eagle team to battle all season. With their ranks somewhat depleted through graduations and the loss of several key players, look to the Seniors to carry the load. Mike and Mark McAteer , Richard Hudzik, Alex Day, Yale Gropman, Craig Mende, will see plenty of ice time.

The Season will really kick-off this week with a plenty of Holiday action scheduled.

UP-COMING SCHEDULE::

Monday: Scrimmage @ Palisades vs Clarkstown ( Bus leaves immediately after school)
Tuesday : Off Ice @ Primo Sports 3:30 to 4:45 pm

Little Eagles Start To Fly

11/15/2010

One year ago Msgr. Farrell pushed around the Burke JV team . Bigger, faster, and ready to go , the Baby Eagles returned the favor with a 6-5 victory at Ice Time on Sunday.

After Burke scored three goals in the first period , Farrell responded with their own offensive flurry; scoring four goals to take the lead. After trading third period goals, a late score by the Eagles sealed the victory.

 Varsity Gets it Going....

Tuesday will see the Varsity begin their season with a trip to the Pavilion in Staten Island. Msgr. Farrell, last year's Catholic School Champs, will be waiting. New Season-New Seniors- New Faces

10/25/2010

Burke Catholic has begun their off-ice workouts: fitness/running at the school - cycling at the YMCA.

Led by Seniors, Mark and Mike McAteer, Richard Hudzik, Matt Lounsbury, Craig Mende, the Eagles are working on conditioning to prepare them for the season.

With each new season challenges arise, yet with the loss of last year's top gunners , Jay Healey , Dillon Dolansky, Josh Koerner, the 2010 season might prove to be a little more so.

If the early work-outs are any indication of commitment to the season , then the current team should do quite well; attendance has been excellent and the seniors have taken their inherited role as leaders with enthusiasm. Question is.... can they skate as well as they run. Stay tuned. On ice practices start November 1.

Burke Boys Scoop Up Awards.....

03/16/2010

Seniors Jay Healey, Dillon Dolansky , and Junior Josh Koerner were selected first team ALL-Record Team. For the second year running Burke Catholic placed three players on the first team. This was also the second first team selection for Jay Healey.

Josh Koerner was also selected for the Honorable Mention Team chosen by coaches and representatives The New York State High School Hockey Coaches Association.

Congratulations to the Boys for their fine seasons.

In case you missed it: IT HAPPENS.........

Burke Catholic had its own kind of meltdown in the Regional--giving up 5 goals in just about three minutes. How about #2 ranked Suffern. Leading 3-1 with .31 seconds to play, the Section 1 Mounties were shocked by eventual D1 Camps West Genesee(#1) in with a real tough 4-3 OT loss.

Sometimes you win and sometimes you........

In A NY Minute...........

03/08/2010
The Burke Varsity Season came to a screeching halt with a 7-3 loss to ST. Lawrence. Sporting a 3-0 lead on the blades of Junior Josh Koerner, the Eagles gave it all back and then some, as the Lallies tallied for 5 goals in 2min and 43 seconds to take a 5-3 lead to the first intermission...

Although the young Eagles battled the rest of
the way -they never recovered. St.Lawrence will now head to Utica to play in the Final Four. We wish them luck.

Josh Koerner capped off his breakout season with a hat trick - including two short handed
goals. Josh's energy and fine play lifted the Eagles through-out the season.

Seniors Jay Healey and Dillon Dolansky played their final game for Burke Catholic. Both boys were four year varsity players with two overall Section 9 championships, three D2 championships, a Regional championship, and a trip to the State Final Four under their belt....not to shabby. Senior Austin Spears also ended his brief career with the Eagles . A late comer, who until this year never played goaltender, Austin was a big help in practice and a solid respected member of the team.

The Eagles were competitive throughout the season. Their 13-8 overall record-winners of The Scarsdale Tournment-Section 9 D2 Champions was above and beyond any early expectations.

With a good Junior class waiting to take its leadership role as seniors and a good supporting group of underclassmen- with playing experience - next year's team looks promising.

Varsity Section 9 D2 Champs...The Road To Utica....

03/02/2010

Junior Josh Koerner spearheaded an 8-0 trouncing of O'Neill, propelling the Burke Catholic Varsity into a weekend showdown with Section 10 champs ST. Lawrence Central Larries for the NYS HS Regional title.

Burke will host the game Saturday 1pm at Ice time Sports.

Saturday's game will mark the third consecutive year the Eagles have earned a chance to compete in the Finals at Utica NY March 13/14th.

Although a 1-2 overall Regional record, the Eagles have represented themselves well. Both losses at the hands of Sweet Home were by one goal; including a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss in 2007/08.

The third trip proved to be a charm. The Eagles 4-0 shutdown of Salmon River at the Shamrock's hostile rink gave Burke their first trip to the Final Four.

A disputed goal ended the Eagles quest in Utica as Phelam skated to the 3-2 semi final victory.

So....with a 13-7 final record , a young Eagles squad led by Senior Captains Jay Healey and Dillon Dolansky, will give their best effort to continue on the road to Utica.

Go Eagles................

Today 02/23/2010---cycling cancelled.

NO PHONES..WEATHER..ECONOMY

02/16/2010

Don Bosco Prep scored early and often to defeat the Eagles 9-5. Goaltender Eric Hayden, who has been one of the biggest surprises of the season, had very little help defensively with the Bosco offensive attack.

Bosco, which had 90 players tryout for their team in the fall, kept the pressure on the Eagles through out the game. Josh Koerner was the lone bright spot for the varsity , bringing the roster challenged Eagles back from a 5-0 deficit to a 6-4 game. Josh , using his outstanding speed, scored his 5th hat trick of the season. Yale Gropman and Richard Hudzik completed the Eagle scoring.

With Ithaca cancelling their game this Friday ( they could not afford the motel) the Eagles have completed their regular season with a 12-7 record.

Friday's game slot will be utilized yet senior night will have to be re-scheduled again. Ithaca becomes the third team that has cancelled with very little notice. A NY State mandate of playing 20 games ( down from 24), weather, and now the economy , has wreaked some havoc on the schedule.

The JV team will be playing this Saturday 8:15pm@ Icetime. This is the re-scheduled game vs Farrell.

The Eagles will now prepare for their must win playoff game vs O'Neill on Sunday the 28th.

CYCLING CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW

Study Hard..Play Hard..Reap the Rewards...

02/14/2010

It's been no secret that the Burke Catholic Hockey team has been one of the most successful hockey programs in the local area; over the course of the last two seasons- Section 9 and D2
Champs-Last Year's Regional Champs ; A 65 and 26 record over the last four years. Many of those players have moved on to play college hockey and have been very successful. Last week , theTimes Herald Record posted a story listing the former Eagles currently playing in the college ranks . The schools range from Siena, American University, Niagra, and New Haven.

All of the players mentioned in the article play for teams registered in American College Hockey Association. It is comprised of colleges throughout the county representing different geographical areas. There are D1-D2-D3 men and women teams. Depending on the program, they play a very competitive schedule highlighted by National Championships.

Point: if you can get into a college you can continue to play. Burke Catholic is very proud of the fact that the boys mentioned in the article had the grades and the SAT scores to be accepted by their respective institutions. Their hard work both on and off the ice enabled them the opportunity to be classified as student athletes at the Collegiate level.

So...Study hard..Play hard..Reap the rewards....

NOTES: Siena's D3 team will be playing in their playoffs at IceTime the last weekend in February...Coach Scott Malinowski jr is a graduate of the college ranks--Scott was a member of two time National Champs Morrisville College and a graduate of Towson State College where he played for their D1 club program.......Baseball calls: Coach Alex Trezza - former StonyBrook University D1 Club Ice Hockey all time leading scorer and currently professional Baseball player for the Worcester Tornadoes, has accepted an assistant coaching job at Anna Marie College in Worcester Mass. Alex, with eight years of minor league expierience with the Detroit Tigers , Colorado Rockies, North Shore Spirit, will
continue his career with the Tornadoes while working towards his masters and coaching at the collegiate level....Coach John Conroy has been a big help on the bench this year--he has volunteered his time while attending Mount St. Mary College where he is a member of their D3 baseball team-John had a great fall season and will be the Mount's starting first baseman.

Make sure to check the schedule for the final games of the year. Sunday's Jv will have to be re-scheduled as Msg. Farrell has canceled.

Eagles Roll..Work Toward Playoffs....

02/06/10

Junior Craig Mende forced an offensive turnover inside the blue line and Jay Healey finished the work with one of his 5 points on the night , helping lift the Eagles to thier 13 win of the season.

Final score: Eagles 6- Beekman 3.

With Beekman rolling into town from upstate New York, 10-2 and ranked in the top ten of D2 schools , the Eagles were more than up to the challenge. Josh Koerner(3/1), Jay Healey(1/4), Richard Hudzik(1), Alex Day(1), lit up the scoreboard while Dillon Dolansky and his defensive crew helped secure the well earned victory.

Sophomore Goaltender Eric Hayden stopped 23 of 26 shots while the penalty kill unit led by Mike McAteer killed off five of six odd man advantages.

The Eagles improve to 13-6 on the season with the playoffs , regional, final four placement, up for grabs.

Notes: Msg. Farrell has canceled Saturday's game due to ' maybe a chance' of snow. The Varsity will scrimmage NFA-8pm...Senior Night will be moved to 02/19.....Glad to report Mark McAteer is back home and getting better....

Those that think they can succeed usually do.........

Add One To The Trophy Case....

01/27/2010
Co-Captains Seniors Dillon Dolansky and Jay Healey led the Varsity to a victory over The Harvey School in the finals of the Scarsdale Tournament; Final score 6-2.

In a final game that had to be re-scheduled to Wednesday afternoon at The Harvey School, the Eagles shut down the Cavaliers over the last two periods to gain the win.

Jay Healey netted 4 goals and 2 assist to lead the offense while Juniors Mike McAteer and Richard Hudzik completed the scoring with one goal each.

Dillon Dolansky gained the Tournament Defensive MVP award for his fine play and Co-Captain Jay Healey received the Tournament Offensive MVP award. Mike McAteer and Richard Hudzik were selected to The All-Tournament team.

After allowing two goals in the first period, the Eagles went into shut down mode; led by a tough defense and sophomore goaltender Eric Hayden ( saving 15 of 17 shots on net) .

The solid team effort helped bring home the Hardware....

The varsity will get the weekend off as they recharge for the final weeks of the season. Their toughest competition will be in the weeks ahead-D1 teams Beekman, Msg. Farrell, Ithaca- as they prep for another bid to the NYS D2 final four in Utica.

Notes: JV in action Friday 4:pm vs NFA--Saturday 8pm vs Lakeland.

DEFENSIVE BATTLE ENDS IN LOSS....

01/23/10

IN the best Section 9 contest of the year, Monroe netted a late third period goal to defeat the Burke varsity 2-1.

Sophomore goaltender Eric Hayden once again stepped up his game to turn away 16 0f 18 Crusader shots; including a penalty shot with three minutes left in the game.

The Eagles overall defensive game dramatically improved yet missed opportunities by the offense sealed the Eagle's fate.

Senior Dillon Dolansky led the defensive team of Connor Dolansky, Alex Day, and Freshman Liam Hatch to their best performance of the season.

Mike McAteer scored the lone Eagle goal.

The Varsity will now travel on Wednesday to Katonah to finish the Scarsdale Tournament that was postponed due to snow. Game time 3:45 vs The Harvey School. Bus leaves at 1:30.

Alumni: Dane Wakefield is back at school leading the Niagra D1 club team.

Since returning , Dane is 4-0-0-1 (one shootout loss). These games include his second
shutout of the season along with a 6-3 win against the nations 11th best (Robert Morris Univerity). Included are two shootouts, winning vs a good team (Mercyhurst) but loosing
in a 13
round shootout to Buffalo. He even had an assist vs Robert Morris........

Burke Graduates Alex Pizzano and the Siena boys-Danny Kelly, Andrew Keating , Tommy Mahoney, Mike Beck, gained a split over the weekend in their D3 Siena contests. Look for the Siena gang as they play in their Regionals late February.

Billy Hluchan is back playing with his club team at American University. After his successful sailing season at the University , Billy will now try to get his hockey team into the
playoffs.

Family Affair:::Healeys---Dolanskys---McAteers

First Timers.........

01/22/2010

Like a boxer absorbing punches , NFA finally wilted under the the relentless Eagle pressure and 48-7 shot advantage to hand Burke Catholic a 8-1 Section 9 victory.

Sophomore TJ Whidden (1) and Junior defenseman Alex Day (2) recorded their first career varsity goals in the win. Jay Healey(2), Mike McAteer, Josh Koerner, Richard Hudzik, all joined the offensive party.

Goaltenders Junior Eric Hayden and Senior Austin Speers enjoyed the view.

The Eagles will now take on the tougher challenge of Monroe Woodbury on Saturday 6pm Ice Time .

JV BOYS VISIT STATEN ISLAND......

01/20/2010
With the City skyline on one side and the famous Staten Landfill on the other, the JV boys encountered a rough Msgr. Farrell team on Wednesday. Despite a gallant effort by a Burke team comprised of 7th thru 10th graders, the young Eagles fell to the older more physical Msgr. Farrell team.

With only a 3-2 deficit into the third period , the Eaglets could not hold off the Raiders; final score Farrell 6 Burke 3.

NOTES: Friday's JV game vs NFA has been moved to next Friday's practice slot---There is an optional practice for both JV and Varsity Friday 22nd-- 4:15 -5:15.----Varsity game vs NFA-Friday 22nd- 9:30 IceTime//Saturday 23rd vs Monroe 6pm........Varsity will make up the Scarsdale tournament final game vs Harvey --Wed 01/27 3:45pm at the Harvey Rink in Katonah..Bus will leave school 1:45pm....Varsity will have to go without the services of JuniorMark McAteer sidelined with a dose of appendicitis..with a little luck he'll be back before the end of the season...
