Close But No Cigar.....

12/10./2010

Young Birds earn their wings........
Freshman Ian Bernes registered his first hat trick as an Eagle to lead the Varsity to a 8-1 win over league rivals NFA.  Senior Mark McAteer also had a big five point  night - netting two goals and three assist -  as the offense came to life pouring 49 shots on goal. Sophomore Sean Matusch(2)and Senior Richard Hudzik rounded out the offensive outburst; final score Eagles 8 NFA 1.

On the defensive side of the blue line, Senior Alex Day led a shortened staff of defenseman to help seal the victory. Senior Yale Gropman, Sophomore Sean Matusch, and Freshman Dylan Healey,  shut down any ideas NFA had about scoring. With Connor Dolansky sustaining a wrist injury, the defense worked overtime in the win.

This year's version of Burke Hockey is a work in progress. Long way to go but with the win a good step forward.

HATS OFF: Mike McAteer, Mark McAteer, Richard Hudzik have been chosen as this year's Varsity Captains while Craig Mende and Connor Dolansky will wear the ' A'.

With the loss of Junior defenseman Connor Dolansky to a wrist injury, the short bench of the Eagles proved to be costly.A weary Eagles defense allowed three third period goals to the Harvey School to absorb a 5-3 loss at Ice Time. Junior goaltender Eric Haden was solid in net but could not save the day. Feshman Ian Bernes, Senior Mark McAteer, and Senior Richard Hudzik continued with their hot hands;  each scoring a goal.

For the second straight night, the varsity went head to head with a good opponent only to fall short in the third period; final score Iona Prep 4 Burke 2. After falling behind 2-0 early , the Eagles stormed back with a power play goal by Senior Alex Day and a 40 ft slap shot goal by Sean Matusch to even things at 2. Iona got the advantage with a third period goal and the game clincher with an empty net tally.

Close but no cigar. The injury ridden Eagles continue to improve and be competitive yet are still trying to figure out how to win. There is no lack of effort in their quest.

Skating in Circles:

Connor Dolansky will be out 4-6 weeks with a broken bone in the wrist area. Connor's loss is a big one for the Eagles as Connor has done a fine job helping lead the defense. Connor is already chomping on the bit to return hopefully sometime in late January..... Nick Musco is rumored to be a week or two away from getting back into action. A leg injury has kept him sidelined since early off-ice practices.....Freshman Dylan Healey has done a fine job on defense since joining the team. Normally a forward, Dylan has stepped up to help out a struggling undermanned defense...senior Yale Gropman has brought his feisty championship soccer attitude to the Eagle defense. Direct from his competitions in this year's NYS Soccer State final , Yale has shown he will not back down when the corners call.....
