Burke Catholic Drops Program

09/09/2011

Just as Burke Catholic decided to join the Catholic School League, the school announced it will be dropping the ice hockey program. All involved did everything in their power to keep the program alive, yet dwindling roster numbers , the closing of Ice Time Sports, and a sour economy, dictated the end results. So after a fine eleven year run, originated by Mr. John Dolan,  the doors will close on a program that was extremely successful yet a victim of the times.

Thanks to all who made the program so successful.

Burke Catholic Joins Catholic School League

09/06/2011

Burke Catholic Ice Hockey will play its inaugural season in the 'A' Division of  CHSHL.  The 'A' Division is comprised of the following teams: St. Joe By The Sea(SI), Msgr. Farrell, Fordham Prep, Iona Prep, Chaminade, St. Anthony, St. Mary. Scheduled games will begin in November.

The eight team league will alleviate many of the scheduling problems the Eagles had encountered with their past affiliation with section 9 hockey. The overall competition will be much better, the league more defined (14 league games), and a playoff schedule that could lead to a berth in a NYS championship vs the winner from the Buffalo Region.

Although the news is exciting, the season will be a challenging one for the Eagles. The 'A' division of the CHSHL will test a very young Squad that will need to be committed to perform at its very best.

With the closing of Ice Time Sports , the Eagles will be practicing and playing some home games at the Palisades Ice Rink in the Palisades mall.

Wednesday Sept. 10TH after school will be the first mandatory meeting for all students interested in joining the team. Practice sessions .. requirements..uniforms .. will be discussed at the meeting.

You Win Some...You Lose Some......Enjoy the Ride...

03/14/11

After a season of ups and downs, the Burke Varsity suffered a 7-1 loss in their state regional game at the hands of the Pelham Pelicans , the Section 1 D2 champs. After running through their playoffs with three straight wins , including an upset 1-0 upset win over Rye,  the Pelicans brought their well tested 'A' game to their home arena; the Eagles had no answers.

Eagle goaltender Eric Hayden stepped up his game facing 52 shots on net while Richard Hudzik scored the lone Eagle goal.

More than the chance to go to the NYS Regionals, the loss was the last game for a fine group of seniors: Mike McAteer, Mark McAteer, Richard Hudzik, Yale Gropman, Alex Day, Craig Mende, Danny Gilmore. Unlike some recent reports on the shortcomings of some local athletes, all the Burke boys will graduate, all have been accepted into a college , all are pretty good friends, all are still smiling, all have the foundation for a great future. Despite injuries, a diminished bench, O'Neill dropping out of the league, a shortened schedule, the seniors never wavered from their loyalty to the Burke program; no losers here.

What goes around comes around.....Pelham lost their first game in Utica on a questionable goal that seemed to hit the crossbar. Burke's 2008 trip to Utica ended on a questionable goal that seemed to hit the crossbar: opponent Pelham. Go figure.

Suffern , Section 1 D1 champs and ranked the #1 team in the state for most of he season , saw their season end in a first round loss in Utica
.

Sometimes you win , sometimes you lose....enjoy the ride.

Burke Alumni Keeps Rolling Along........

03/04/11

Nice article on Burke Catholic and Ice Hockey Alumni Tommy Farr in the TH-Record .

Tommy did a terrific job playing wing for the Eagles ; displaying speed and a quick shot. He helped the Eagles capture a Section 9 overall championship in '08 when Burke Catholic won a thrilling 1-0 victory over Monroe to win the Section title.

Check out below the You Tube link below. Tommy hits post late....Burke holds on for Championship.

State Regional: Burke Catholic vs Pelham..03/05/2011-4pm Ice Hutch

02/27/11

Too Little Too Late..............

02/15/11

On Sunday night, a hard fought contest vs Clarkstown at the Palisades resulted in a 6-5 Varsity loss. Senior Richard Hudzik and Freshman Dylan Healey led the offense with two goals each while Freshman Ian Bernes completed the offensive output for the Eagles with one goal.

Hudzik and Healey both played their best game of the season. The Eagles out shot their opponents 35 to 30 yet could not put a win in the books.

Once again shorthanded by two late scratches , the varsity did not falter despite being down early in the contest 3-1 and late in the third period 6-4; the Eagles continued to ramp up the attack.

Too Little Too Late.......

Weather Again Forces JV Game to be Cancelled

02/05/11

Albany Academy has cancelled due to weather conditions. Unfortunately the weather has reeked havoc on the schedule. We will do our best to make up some of the games.

Any JV player is welcome to skate with the Varsity on Thursdays -- 4 TO 5 PM--. Friday practice is still 4:45 to 5:45. We hope to do more scrimmaging with the Varsity at the Friday practice. The Varsity season is winding down as they get ready for their Regional play-off on 03/05.

Varsity Notes: Seniors Alex Day, assisted by Sophomore Stephen Speer, and Richard Hudzik, assisted by Senior Mike McAteer,  each scored a goal  as the Eagles fought to a 2-2 tie vs the Harvey school in Katonah. Eric Hayden steered away 24 shots on net while the Eagle offense peppered the Harvey net minder with 28 shots.

Although fast an furious , neither team could get the game winner in overtime.

All Together Now...

02/01/11

For the first time in two months the Varsity had a full squad on hand vs Monroe . Although the results were not pretty , having a full bench was a welcome change to the sparse gathering of the last several games.. Truth is , Monroe is now a scrimmage game for the Eagles - albeit a heated one. Since the revised Section IX format; which eliminates any competition for league placement or playoffs, and O'Neill dropping their program, the Eagles are now the sole D2 team in the section. They will play in the first round of the state Regionals vs Section 1 regardless of their record.

Section IX needs an overhaul. With the new State mandate of a 20 game schedule , the majority of games are independent from the league. Scheduling games has become very difficult since other teams use up their allotment of games to play their league schedule. Joining forces with Section 1 , which has numerous teams in many divisions , would make for some practical sense.

Burke Catholic is exploring its options. There is the possibility of playing in the Catholic School league or the newly formed Harvey boarding school league for next season. The local rivalries have been good. Scheduled games within the area can continue ; but it's time for a better format.

Proud to be an Eagle: Despite getting pushed, shoved, and taunted ( a poor display of sportsmanship by their opponents) , the Varsity boys took their lumps in stride. The upperclassman showed true character
in maintaining their composure, the underclassman gave it their best effort, collectively the team supported each other. Easy to be supportive while winning, but a true test of character is how you act in defeat.

Skating in Circles:

Glad to see Senior Craig Mende and family all ok after a fire destroyed their house ..Hockey equipment survived and Craig , being the ultimate team player, showed up to play..... Junior Connor Dolansky and Nick Musco, back from a long stretch on the DL, starting to get their hockey legs back...Mr. Dolan still recovering from a  snow blower accident and we wish him the best--.ALUMNI STUFF...Burke's all time leading scorer, Jason Healey, lighting it up for the Junior B Hitman--tied for league scoring title...Burke Alumni , Tommy Mahoney and Chris Reinfried , leading ACHA Siena to a #1 ranking in the Northeast D1 Club Ranks...Billy Hluchan(American University) and Greg Bruschette ( Iona) trading in the skates and winning several battle of the bands contest with their group Shack...all three captains-- Mike McAteer, Mark McAteer,  and Richard Hudzik all accepted to Johnson & Wales University ( mercy).........

The ' Alamo Gang'......

Holding down the fort might be a little gar fetched, yet the Burke Catholic Varsity, with only 10 skaters including their starting goaltender playing left wing, lost in a shoot-out 4-3 in the first round of the Scarsdale Tournament; Final score Stepinac 4 Burke Catholic 3.

Freshman goaltender Stephen Herschel did all he could to compete for the victory, stopping 22 shots , while regular starting goaltender Eric Hayden did a fine job skating out of the net for the first time in his Varsity career.

Jumping out to a 3-1 lead looked promising for the undermanned Eagles, yet penalties and fatigue finally took their toll.

Seniors Alex Day, Richard Hudzik, Mark McAteer provided the offense with one goal each.

Despite several opportunities in the final seconds of over-time to put a win in the books, the Eagles gallant effort came up a short.

Sunday's Consolation game vs Scarsdale proved to be the second thriller of the weekend. Nick Musco wristed what was the winning goal with two minutes remaining in the third period as the abbreviated Eagle varsity squeezed out a 2-1 win.

Junior net minder  Eric Hayden turned away 26 shots while the defense led by seniors Alex Day and Richard Hudzik were stellar in front of him. Seniors Mike McAteer and Craig Mende logged heavy duty minutes to helped secure the win while underclassmen Teresa Segreti, Steven Speer , Sean Matusch , and Nick Musco played significant roles in the victory.

Clinging to a one goal lead provided by all-tournament team selection senior Mike McAteer early in the contest, the Eagles finally cracked with three minutes left in the third period,  as the Scarsdale Raiders found the back of the Eagles Net.

Time to pack it in...no way... not for the 'Alamo Gang ' who would not be denied; responding with a quick score of their own.

Overall an excellent effort for the Tournament Weekend.

VARSITY SPLITS SECTION 9 WEEKEND.....

01/11/11

Senior Richard Hudzik registered four goals as the Varsity continued their dominance over a young NFA team on Saturday.; final score Burke 10 NFA 2.

Sunday night sang another tune vs section rival Monroe Woodbury. After sophomore Sean Matusch hammered a slap shot into the upper corner to bring the varsity within one, the varsity surrendered three unanswered goals to absorb a 5-1 loss. Senior Hudzik scored the lone Eagle goal

The effort was good, the pace was fast, yet the results in the win column came up empty.

Weekend Specials.....

Senior Richard Hudzik has played both ends of the ice for the last several games. Normally a forward for the first line, the four year varsity member has shored-up the defense with the absence of Conner Dolansky; accepting the role without complaint. With a good shot and strong skating style,  Richard has been a main factor keeping the varsity competitive.

Sophomore Sean Matusch continues to improve his game . The lanky defenseman has settled down from his early season development to be one of the main anchors on the Burke defense. Sean's rocket goal in the Monroe game demonstrated his quick strong shot being his best asset while his defense around the net has improved each week.

Freshman Dylan Healey, finally healthy, is starting to find a home on the offense. Playing mostly center over the weekend, Dylan showed a slick skating style with good vision of the ice. Only good things to come.

Welcome Back....

Sophomore Nick Musco back from a leg injury....Senior Yale Gropman back from his trip to India (nice winter vacation).

Schedule for the Week:

Senior Captains Got It Figured Out : Finishing Up Strong...

01/03/2010

After a long mid season break , the Eagle Varsity led by Senior Captains Mike and Mark McAteer, Richard Hudzik, and Assistant Captain Craig Mende , hope to finish the season in strong fashion.

In a season plagued with injuries and some tough losses , the senior captains have logged plenty of ice time. All four have played multiple positions without complaint while accepting their roles as mentors to the younger players.

Four years with the team; the first two seasons  working their way up with spot roles on a strong state bound twenty man roster; all the boys are now reaping the rewards of their hard work; lots of playing time, leaders of the team, good student athletes, looking ahead to college, having fun.

Think they got it figured out.....maybe that's why they're always smiling.

Weekly Schedule:
Monday - Regular Practice
Thursday- Regular Practice
Friday--JV practice 4:30-5:45
Friday--Varsity vs Harvey-away 5pm-(bus)
