Eagles Fly High With Two Section 9 Wins

Jason Healey( 4 goals-3 assist) and Chris Reinfried(1 goal-6 assist) continued their torrid offensive streak registering 14 points over the weekend as the Varsity swept section 9 opponents O'Neill and Monroe Woodbury. Senior Goaltender Dane Wakefield had a nice little streak of his own as he recorded two shutouts in the victories.

Josh Koerner was the offensive star on Saturday with his two goal effort, yet it was the defense that shined in the win; allowing only 9 shots on net to preserve the shutout.

On Sunday the defense got tougher and better. Led by Wakefield's excellent 32 save effort, the defensive team of Mahoney, Kelly, Keating, Dolanski , Gabrielle, continually forced the Knight's shots far and wide.

Nice Weekend...good team effort.

The win was the first over St. Joes in three years.

Sunday's opponent, Catholic School Champs Iona Prep, presented the first big test of the season for the varsity. Although the results were not on the win side ( L 5-4) , the Eagles played inspired hockey only to surrender the tie breaker in the final minutes of play.

With the graduation of nine seniors ( and starters) from last year's very successful Section 9 Championship team , the Eagles will be depending on many new faces to support the team. The training , supervised by coach Trezza jr, included running, stretching, cycling, and circuit fitness dynamics.

The season jumps right into action with our first scrimmage Monday 9:15 pm at Ice Time vs Lakeland. This is the first of 5 scrimmages that will compliment a 24 game schedule that includes Section 9 rivals O'Neill, Monroe , Newburgh as well as Catholic School teams as Paramus, Chaminade , Stephinac, Farrell, Iona, Fordham Prep, and St.Joes. D1 DREAMING

by Gerald D. Skoning/Special to USCHO
March 6 — The rosters of Division I college hockey teams consist almost entirely of players who have spent a year or two playing for “junior” hockey clubs. Only a very few players on these Division I clubs have entered college directly out of high school. As a result, the quality of college hockey has been enhanced, but this improvement has had a negative impact on the “student” part of the vaunted student-athlete experience.(hit link above--tx Mr. Pizzano)

Tough Ending To Great Year

03/04/08 Just when it seemed the Eagles would skate their way to Utica and the final four , a strong dose of reality in the form of a sudden death overtime loss to Sweet Home ended a great season. By now the details have been written in the TH-record and the hurt still resides with all those who care; yet detail will not overshadow a terrific season by the Varsity.

A 17-5-2 record, winners of the Clarkstown Tournament , Section 9 Div 2 Champions, Section 9 overall Champions, and a class act finish in probably one of the most exciting games at IceTime in recent memory, highlighted the season.

No loss will diminish their accomplishments nor their representation of school and team.

Congratulations to the seniors and all the team members for accepting the challenge to excel and playing out their mantra ' The Time is Now' .................

Notes:
Jv and Varsity season is over--there will be a team pizza party late March or early April---There will be a School Awards dinner ( listen for details in school)---we are trying to secure some ice in April and May for team scrimmages ( all current players- varsity jv-new players will be invited ( if we can get a decent ice slot)....look for details.

TH-Record Preview:DIV 2 Quarterfinal

( SENIORS 08)
Division II state hockey quarterfinal preview: John S. Burke Catholic vs. Sweet Home
Division II state hockey tournament
What: John S. Burke Catholic (17-4-2) vs. Buffalo-area Sweet Home (15-8-4) in state quarterfinals
When: 3:15 p.m. today
Where: Ice Time, Newburgh
Admission: $4, $2 for students children
At stake: Trip to the Division II final four next weekend in Utica. The Burke Catholic-Sweet Home winner will play the Thousand Islands-Rye winner at 3:15 p.m. next Saturday. The final is 3:30 p.m. March 9.
How they got here
Burke Catholic beat James I. O'Neill 4-0 for the Section 9 Division II title on Feb. 20 at Ice Time. Sweet Home beat top-seeded Bishop Timon-St. Jude 2-0 on Sunday to win the Western New York Hockey Federation championship, as reported in The Buffalo News.
Talkin' hockey
Burke Catholic coach Al Trezza: "This group got better and better as the year went on. We don't have any superstars. We are doing things by way of (perfect) attendance in practice and coming to the games. And it's nice to have nine seniors.''
Keys to victory
Burke Catholic needs to show the same hunger it did in beating defending Division II state champion Monroe-Woodbury 1-0 for the Section 9 title last weekend. The win snapped Monroe-Woodbury's run of six straight sectional titles. Burke Catholic goalie Mike Beck has had a terrific season and will have to be on top of his game again. Ryan Marko is Sweet Home's all-time leading scorer. Goalie Rob Cattiglia was named most valuable player with 28 saves against Bishop Timon-St. Jude. "Our game is just hard work,'' Trezza says. "That's it. We play three lines, five to six defensemen, and we go out and work hard.''
