Weekend Update 01/01/07

After posting an eight game winning streak, the Varsity Eagles stumbled on the holiday road trip with defeats to Iona Prep 6-3 and Jefferson Twsp (NJ) 4-3; both teams are in first place in their respective divisions.

On Friday, Iona Prep demonstrated their impressive speed, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. What looked like a blowout suddenly became a contest, as Chris Reinfried, Greg Brushett, and the hard working Eagles responded with two goals. Burke continued to swarm the net but could not get things even.

With the door left open, Iona’s quick offense scored three unanswered goals to ice the victory.

On Saturday, the finals of the Jefferson Township Tournament in Skylands NJ, the Eagles suffered their most disappointing loss of the season; losing 4-3 in the last minute of play.

With two early goals by Tommy Farr and John Conroy, the varsity looked poised to capture the first Skylands Cup with a 2-0 lead. Yet the home team, Jefferson Township, had different plans, as they chipped away to tie the score at two.

After a hard working goal by Danny Kelly with an assist from Greg Brushett put the varsity on top 3-2 at the end of two, Jefferson battled back with goals in the first and last minute of play of the third period to capture the Cup.

Hats off to both teams for a hard fought contest.
