Gallant Effort Not Enough...Eagles Suffer First Sect 9 Loss...

12/21/2009

Despite a gallant effort by the Eagles , Monroe proved to be the better offensive team on this Sunday night ; scoring four goals in the final period to down the varsity 8-4 in the first meeting of Section 9 rivals.

The Eagles did not go down without a fight. Trailing from the early going, Jay Healey(2), Josh Koerner, Richard Hudzik all scored goals to help bring the Eagles back from a 4-1 deficit.

But to no avail.

Missed opportunities, a goal called back , overall poor defensive play , helped fuel a Monroe team which took full advantage and pull away for the victory.

Senior Dillon Dolansky once again showed his determination and grit with a another fine effort.

With the toughest part of the schedule ahead of them, the young Eagles will have to team together as they struggle for another State Regional berth.

OT Loss Closes Tough Holiday Weekend

With a once in a lifetime penalty call--highlighted and studied laboriously in the ref's free time--Lakeland/ Panas took advantage of the gift to tie the score at three and eventually win 4-3 in overtime over the weekend weary Eagles.

With multiple scrimmages and a high paced Lakeland contest on tap for the Holiday weekend, the Eagles played well in their first tough competition of the season.

Friday and Saturday featured the Salmon River Shamrocks, ready and willing to get revenge from last year's loss at the Regionals . Both teams came out swinging - 37 penalties dished out in Friday's game by the men in stripes-with Salmon River surviving the 2-1 scrimmage.

Saturday's Scarsdale Jamboree scrimmage brought more of the same effort and the same results. Shamrocks 2...Burke Catholic 1.

Burke also split scrimmages at the Scarsdale Jamboree with a 3-2 loss to Fieldstone Prep and a 3-1 win over Scarsdale.

Josh Koerner continued his fine offensive play with multiple goals for the weekend along with a solid defensive effort by Dillon Dolanski. Jay Healey,Nick Musco, and Richard Hudzig also chipped in on the offensive side.

The revamped Eagles will now play their first League contests of the season ; O'Neil on Thursday at West Point and NFA at home on Sunday.

Koerner's Energy- Speed Leads Eagles

11/21/2009

Five unanswered goals propelled the Burke Catholic Eagles to a 7-4 victory over Lakeland /Panas.

Junior Josh Koerner continued his fine play, scoring his second hat trick of the season, while senior Jay Healey registered a goal and three assists. Junior Richard Hudzig, sophomore Connor Dolanski , and freshman Nicholas Musco rounded out the scoring for the Eagles. (Connor and Nick's goals were the first of their careers.)

Sophomore goaltender Eric Hayden continued to impress with a fine 25 save effort.

The young defensive unit of Liam Hatch, Yale Gropman, Conner Dolanski, Alex Day, led by Co-Capt Dillon Dolanski are improving with each shift.

Despite the loss of 20 seniors over the past two seasons , the young Eagles seem fit and ready to take on the challenges of the new season. With a tough Holiday weekend on tap, including last year's state regional opponent Salmon River on Friday, they will have their work cut out for them.

Eagles Get First Win..........

Junior Josh Koerner flew out of the gates and into a new season scoring four goals to lead the Eagles to their first win of the year. Final score Burke Catholic 5 Iona Prep 3.

With some quick skating and accurate shooting , Josh ignited a revamped Eagle team that lost 20 seniors over the course of the last two seasons.

Senior Defenseman Dillon Dolanski was rock solid on defense while senior Jay Healey logged major minutes in the victory.

Junior forward Richard Hudzig scored his first goal of the season, while the Mac boys , Michael and Mark , played aggressive two way hockey.

Sophomore goaltender Eric Hayden responded to his first varsity start in goal , registering 17 saves - including a penalty shot - to preserve the victory.

With many new faces in the line-up, the Eagles got off to good start in defense of their Section 9 and Regional titles of last season.

Notes: Seniors Dillon Dolanski and Jay Healey have been chosen by the coaches to wear the Captain's 'C'. Both players are four year members of the team and excellent student athletes. Junior Josh Koerner , a three year member of the team , will be the Assistant Captain.

Early Season Workouts Begin

9/28/2009 - The Burke hockey team will have their first meeting and off ice practice on Monday 09/28/2009. All players should be in attendance.

Off-ice practices will continue throughout October with cycling and spinning for fitness beginning in three weeks.

The last two seasons have been very sucessful. Pre-season conditioning and off-ice training has played a big roll in the team's accomplishments. With the graduation of nine seniors the opportunities and challenges of this year's team will be substantial.

Alumni Notes:
  • Goaltender Dane Wakefield is off to nice start with the Niagra University Club Team. Dane's impressive pre-season earned him his first start of the year -- not bad for a freshman. Check out the team's web page http://www.nuachahockey.com/index.php.

Dane's performance last year was outstanding as he helped lead the Burke Catholic Eagles to their first regional championship and first trip to the state final four.

HEY COACH--WRONG SPORT!!

By Chad Garner CORRESPONDENT

Worcester’s Alex Trezza hits a solo home run in the third inning. (T&G Staff/JIM COLLINS)WORCESTER —
What started out as a promising four-game series for the Worcester Tornadoes turned out to be pretty mediocre.
While the Tornadoes won the first two games against the American Defenders of New Hampshire, they watched the visitors — dressed in camouflage uniforms — salvage a series split with a ninth-inning rally on Saturday night and yesterday’s 7-4 win at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
“We went out there and took two to start off with, it’s just a matter of closing out the series,” said Worcester starting pitcher Matt Weagle, who absorbed the loss. “They are a good team. They’re not just going to lay down and die for us, we’ve just got to finish it.”

Worcester took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off New Hampshire winning pitcher Miguel Flores, who was making his first start of the season. Mike MacMillan flicked a single over the first baseman’s head and hustled around to score on Jeff LaHair’s RBI triple to left field that took a bad hop and skipped past Jerod Edmondson.
But New Hampshire struck for two runs off right-hander Weagle. Argenis Tavarez got aboard on a one-out infield single, and designated hitter Rob Riley lined a single to right. Both scored on Boomer Berry’s booming two-run double off the right field wall.

Worcester catcher Alex Trezza got the Tornadoes back even at 2-2 with a towering solo home run to right.

Weagle labored in the third inning, as Edward Ovalle drilled a double off the right field wall and Edmondson followed with an RBI single up the middle. Weagle’s errant pickoff throw to first base allowed Edmondson to scamper to third on the two-base error, and the left fielder trotted home on Tavarez’s sacrifice fly to left for a 4-2 lead.

Clyde Williams drilled a solo homer to right, and Chris Kelly doubled to the left-center gap in the fifth inning, prompting Tornadoes manager Rich Gedman to call to the bullpen. Reliever Nick Conway came in and served up RBI singles to Ovalle and Tavarez.
Weagle allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 4-1/3 innings.

“I’m very disappointed in myself, but in five days, I’ll get the ball again, and I’ll make up for it,” Weagle said.
Worcester cut the deficit to 7-3 with a bases-loaded walk to Carlos Sosa in the fifth.

The Tornadoes kept chipping away, scoring one run as the hosts trailed, 7-4, after six innings.
LaHair greeted New Hampshire reliever Keith Renaud, a Southbridge native, with a single to center. Heath Keel walk, and Garrett Olson drilled an RBI double to left.

“I think we have a pretty good squad over here, and we’re not going to let these two games get to us,” said LaHair, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Varsity Bid For State Title Falls Short

Burke Catholic moved into a new neighborhood on Saturday; the NYS High School finals in Utica NY. Never before has a Burke Hockey team reached the 'Final Four' and dispite a tough 3-2 loss to Section 1 Pelham, the Eagles represented John S Burke Catholic and Section 9 with their usual class and grit.

After a scoreless first period , Senior co-captain Tommy Mahoney got the Eagles on the board with a short wrist shot. With Senior Goaltender Dane Wakefield working on his ninth straight shut-out period and the Salmon River shut-out fresh in their memory banks , the varsity had their sites on the Sunday finals; Pelham had other ideas.

Two goals ( one legitimate, one questionable) in 49 seconds put the Eagles is desperation mode and a deficit to tough to overcome.

As with last year's team , this Burke varsity would not go away easy. Junior Jason Healey once again demonstrated his big game abilities with an unassisted breakaway goal , his 6th goal of the post season, to get the varsity within one.

That would be as close to the State Championship they would get.

With their trip to the State Final Four the Burke Varsity reached new heights . A 19-5-2 record, Overall Section 9 League Champions, Divison 2 Section Champions., State Regional Champions, indicated a terrific season that fell just short of spectacular.

Hats off to the entire team. Especially the seniors who represented the program in such a positive way.

Eagles Soar--Sweep Section 9 & D2 Championships

Jay Healey and company skated to their final Section 9 victory of the season with an impressive 6-0 over D2 rivals O'Neill. With the win, the Burke varsity secured a state regional birth somewhere near Potsdam ( TBA) March 7th vs the winner of section 10. The win also ensured an undefeated season within league play (9-0-1) and the first Burke Catholic team to repeat as section champions. All in all quite a season.

As he has done all season, Junior Jason Healey lifted the offense on his shoulders with a four goal game. With 36 goals and 20 assist Jason has put together a terrific offensive campaign. Jason along with senior linemate Chris Reinfried have formed a tandem that might be hard to top in the eight year history of the program.

Senior goaltender Dane Wakefield was as good as he had to be with the shutout win while Danny Kelly and the defense of Mahoney, Dolanski , Keating and Gabriele allowed only 13 shots on net.

Sophomores Josh Koerner and Mark McAteer completed the scoring for the Eagles. A total team effort secured the victory.

The varsity will now attempt to get to the final four in Utica on March 14th and a possible state championship.

WINNING WEEKEND--SECTION 9 CHAMPIONS

After five months of hard work the Burke Catholic Varsity stormed through the Weekend in dramatic fashion to clinch their second consecutive Section title. Victories over league opponents NFA( 4-1), Monroe 5-4, O'Neill ( 8-1) left no doubt about their championship status

The winning weekend kicked off with a 4-1 victory over NFA. With the Goldbacks clinging to 1-0 lead late in the second period, the Eagles leading scorer Jayson Healey wristed a shot into the upper corner of the net to get things even; the Eagles never looked back.

Sophomore Josh Koerner (2g) and Chris Reinfried(2a) teamed up to score two shorthanded goals while Tommy Mahoney added a power play goal to seal the contest. Senior goaltender Dane Wakefield steered aside all but one shot as the defense allowed only 11 shots on net. The offense blasted 48 shots on their opponents.

On Saturday , with the opportunity to clinch the section title, the Eagles responded with a gritty winning effort . Two seniors , Andrew Keating and Taylor Stuart, teamed up with what would be the most exciting play of their Eagle careers.

With just over a minute remaining in a classic 4-4 Burke/Monroe battle , defensman Keating pinched along the offensive blue line- fighting his way to the corner with the puck. A quick pass to the front of the net found a scrum of players and Taylor Stuart waiting to finish off the Knights.

Taylor's first goal of the season secured the win and the Championship; Final Burke Catholic 5 Monroe 4.

Jayson Healey, Josh Koerner, Mark Woinicki, Chris Reinfried accounted for the balance of the scoring. Senior Goaltender Dane Wakefielded stopped 22 of 26 shots.

With title in hand, Sunday's contest vs O'Neill was an exclamation point to the regular season. Seven different players found the net with Jayson Healey again leading the charge with two goals and an assist. Josh Koerner completed his terrific weekend ( 4 goals) with a third period tally. Final score Varsity 8 O'Neill 1.

Sunday's game also featured ' Senior Night' as seniors and their parents received recognition for their participation in the Burke program.

Senior Dane Wakefield (our resident quote master) summed it up best. " I think we really came together as a team".

With the victories, the Eagles improve to 16-4-2. A February 22nd meeting with O'Neill at Icetime will decide which team will represent Section 9 in the Div 2 State regional in Potsdham March 7th.

The Battle Continues....

01/31/2009

Two goals by Eagle sharpshooter Jason Healey were not enough to clinch a victory over fierce rivals Monroe Wooodbury on Saturday , as the Knights answered with two goals in the final period to get the contest even at 2-2. The five minute overtime period proved to be as exciting as the first 45 minutes with end to end rushes by both teams ending in futility.

Senior Goaltender Dane Wakefield was up to the challenge, turning away 30 of the 32 shots while the Eagles tested the Monroe goaltender with 29 shots on net.

With Chuck Gabriele filling in very nicely at the center position, the defensive four of Tommy Mahoney, Danny Kelley, Andrew Keating, Dillon Dolanski, worked very hard on defense.

With the tie, the Eagles improve to 13-4-2 . They continue to sit on top of the Section 9 standings entering the final days of the season. With three league games remaining, including Monroe, the varsity will have to play their best hockey of the season to repeat as section champions.

Varsity Skates Past Fordham Prep

01/12/09

The Eagles added another Catholic School team to their conquered list with a convincing 5-3 victory over Fordham Prep. The game, played away at Rye Playland, featured another offensive outburst from the Healey, Reinfried , Woinicki line as well as fine efforts from senior defensman Tommy Mahoney and Goaltender Dane Wakefield.

Sophomore Richard Hudzik also scored a power play goal to help lift theEagles.

With three starters still out with injuries, the Varsity picked up their game to come away with the win.

Side Notes:

Senior Andrew Musco did what very few opponents have done this year; score a goal on Dane. Not unusual except for the fact that Andrew , not to be denied, knocked in his own rebound!!!.
Musco has stepped up his game this year centering the second and third lines.

Little Eagles Battle Stepinac:

The Burke JV loaded with 6th 7th and 8th graders skated to a 4-3 loss Sunday at Ice Time. Athough Stepinac held the height and weight advantage , playing all high school players, the speedy JR Eagles just came up just short of the victory.

Reinfried and Wakfield tell it like it is. See Th-Record Article:

BANGED UP AND BRUISED

01/05/2009
The Eagles limped to their final game of the Holiday season with 4-1 victory over Paramus Catholic. The Healey,Reinfried,Hudzik line produced all the offensive damage as goaltenders Dane Wakefield and Brendan Menkens shut the door on Paramus.

With a busy holiday schedule that saw the varsity play its toughest competition of the year, losses to Iona Prep and Whitesboro were the direct result of the varsity's undisciplined play.

A total of 60 minutes in penalties by the Eagles erased any opportunity for the Eagles to succeed.

A bounce back 2-2 tie against a tough Pitsford team at the Ice Plex Tournament and the win against Paramus provided a nice finish to a rough week.

Senior Goaltender Brendan Menkens earned his first varsity win stopping 32 shots on net....

With the loss of Dolanski, the defensive unit of Kelly, Gabriele, Keating, Mahoney , Connor Dolanski worked overtime to secure the backline.

From the hospital bed.............

The injury list continues to mount with four starters sporting bandages or casts. Dillon Dolanski, Mark Woinicki,Mark McAteer , Josh Koerner, will be sidelined until further notice. Hopefully they will heal quickly and return for some important games late in the season.

Seniors Head For Homestretch.......... No Seniors on the disabled list. Look for a strong finish from the Senior boys.
